Key Stories Part 1: Pattie Brennan
“Stay true to your principles and passions, stay focused on client outcomes, and work hard.” That’s how a trained nurse and mother of four started a financial planning company in her laundry room nearly thirty years ago and became one of the nation’s top financial advisors.
Patti Brennan, CFP, President of Key Financial, Inc., and a generous and enthusiastic supporter of fellow female entrepreneurs, is the first to admit it wasn’t easy. At the beginning of this three-part series, we meet Brennan starting out and fighting to survive.
In those early years, flexibility was “key.” Brennan wanted to build the business, but also be present with her children. Her daily routine, sans commute, included 6 am emails before getting the kids on the bus, followed by meetings with staff, then clients, and delegating tasks for the next day, before family time and a few more hours of work late at night. Brennan and her husband (who started his business in the dining room) were able to provide the life they dreamed of for their children. “But we didn’t have a social life,” she says with a laugh.
Brennan recently discovered a copy of her first brochure in the files of a long-time client. It promises “someone reliable, realistic, diligent…” who will “help protect your money.” Brennan’s client-focused, holistic approach to real financial planning, and her dedication to mentoring her employees were the founding principles that brought her through tough times and still resonate with her today. “Stay focused on clients,” she says, “and the rest will take care of itself.”
In part two of our four-part series, Brennan will share what she calls “the messy middle,” weathering the financial crisis and fighting to grow.
