From June 12th through August, PECO is installing new high-powered gas lines and repaving East Gay Street between Matlack and High streets. Though the street will be closed until 4pm on weekdays, all restaurants and shops will be open during the project, and sidewalks will be open to foot traffic. Parking is available in the Chestnut Street Garage. East Gay Street will be open to street traffic on evenings after 4pm and weekends.
“East Gay Street will be closed to vehicular traffic Monday through Friday from 7am to 4pm,” said Malcolm Johnstone, Executive Director of the West Chester Business Improvement District. “Pedestrians will have full access to businesses at all times. The streets will be fully open to auto traffic after 4pm and on weekends.”
Malcolm also noted that the shops and restaurants have collaborated to ensure the West Chester destination experience stays intact during construction.
“The entire downtown community has come together to help promote East Gay as a shopping and dining destination,” Malcolm said. “With less traffic on Gay Street, there is an opportunity to enjoy it as a walking mall. Supporting our hometown businesses is always appreciated.”
First Friday is August 2 from 6:30-9pm, and the West Chester Race Series is on Saturday, August 11 from 2-10pm. Join the excitement of these two great events coming soon.
