    New Exhibit: Ana Vizcarra Radkin

    Ana Vizcarra Rankin: time/scale
    October 7, 2017 to November 5, 2017
    http://bit.ly/2wyG4xh

In large-scale paintings and hand-crafted collages of astronomical constellations and world maps, Vizcarra Rankin investigates themes of space, time, and correlation and intertwines them with larger discussions about humanity, globalization, migration, and scientific exploration.
Disorienting and startling, Ana Vizcarra Rankin’s poetic compositions reorient humanity’s relation to the universe, urging us to reconsider our assumptions about territorial boundaries and human impact on the planet and the cosmos. Looking up to the sky and down to the ground, Vizcarra Rankin collapses solar systems and earth into universal moments of time, space, and history.
Ana Vizcarra Rankin: time/scale, elaborates on phenomenological aspects of ‘time scale’— applying personal moments of life to measure the relative distance and duration of social and cosmic history. Vizcarra Rankin reflects on both human existence in the world and the technical geologic term of timescale, questioning our established knowledge of geography and astronomy.
The exhibition is curated by Philadelphia Contemporary and presented by the Brandywine River Museum of Art.

    Carmen en Flamenco

Flamenco Dance Illustrates the story of “CARMEN”
No Soprano. No Tenor. Just Dance and Orchestra.
This is Not Your Grandma’s Opera!

Like you’ve never seen before, sensational Flamenco dancer Liliana Ruiz, with Maestro Daniel Spalding and his 22 piece orchestra, perform a unique interpretation of Bizet’s “Carmen” as arranged by Russian composer Rodin Shchedrin. They bring to Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center an exclusive production designed to leave audiences not just entertained, but enthralled.

Liliana Ruiz specializes in Classical Spanish Dance with castanets, brilliant costumes, Folklore and Flamenco. She has shared the stage with such celebrities as Julio Iglesias at the Premier Club, Peter Nero and the Philly POP’s at the Kimmel Center and in Carmen with Placido Domingo at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City. Raised in Mexico City, she has been dancing professionally since the age of thirteen, inspired by her family’s deep-rooted passion for the arts.

Maestro Spalding is recognized as “one of the most innovative conductors on today’s music scene” (L. Budman, Miami Herald). He and the Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra have dazzled audiences from L.A. to New York’s Lincoln Center and from Rio de Janeiro to Moscow’s iconic Tchaikovsky Hall with unique and powerful performances, re-defining the classical music experience. Their CD recording of “Carmen” was a Grammy finalist, using drums, marimbas and xylophones to bring forth the authentic flavor and syncopated rhythms of the music.

    Better Than Bacon Gives Back

Better Than Bacon is Suburban Philly’s favorite interactive improvisational comedy show. Voted “Best Comedy Troupe – Critics Choice” by Main Line Today since 2011, Better Than Bacon performs completely unscripted improvisational games, driven by audience suggestions and participation. Every show is a brand new experience!

Their November 2017 show is a special “Bacon Gives Back” performance benefiting Act in Faith of Greater West Chester, an interfaith organization that provides support for unemployed and under-employed members of our community. Better Than Bacon supports their efforts with an improvised comedy event Friday, November 24th, 7:30pm at West Chester’s new theater, Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center.

A majority of the Better Than Bacon performers met at improv comedy classes offered by a local adult night school. After taking the same classes together for over 3 years, it was time to break out and see if they could become a real improv comedy troupe. In June 2010, Dan Stabb came on board as coach, rehearsals began regularly and Better Than Bacon was born. The cast includes comedians Lauren Burawski, Bob Curran, Jack Dibeler, Brett Heller, Lauren Henry, Amy Hitchcock, Gerry Kniezewski, Steve Murphy, Susan Price and Dan Stabb. They make up every single word and perform every single action interactively, on-the-spot. Audience members return show after show because each and every performance is unique.

Travel Adventure Series: Ghosts of the Gold Rush with Gray Warriner

Deadwood. Tombstone. Robbers Roost. Even today, these words speak to us of a wild, somewhat unsavory past. With more than their share of outlaws and ‘lawless’ lawmen, the boom towns and mining camps of the west became famous around the world. Follow the footsteps of Butch Cassidy, The Sundance Kid, and the Wild Bunch throughout the mountain west.

From the millions mined in Colorado, to California’s historic Highway 49 in the heart of the 49ers ‘motherlode country’, the ghosts of the gold rush are still with us. Pony Express stations, old stage stops and trading posts… to railroads to nowhere, the West reveals its long-hidden past in the deserts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and old New Mexico.

Journey to see the still-visible, rich history of the West that remains… and some of the most spectacular places in North America.
