    What’s Up At Uptown! October – November Events

    There is a whole new lineup of great events at Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center for the fall season including signature concerts and performances. Don’t miss your chance to experience the incredible showmanship and theatrical talent right here in the West Chester community.

    Event: Speaker Series: Virginia Tech: A Survivor’s Perspective on Trauma & Recovery with Lisa Hamp

    When: Tuesday, October 16, 2018 6:30pm

    About: Lisa Hamp was a junior at Virginia Tech, and was present during the April, 2007 shooting. She shares her first-hand testimony of the shooting and her recovery journey afterwards. She describes how her class built a barricade to prevent the shooter from entering their classroom, and her struggle to find her new normal after the shooting. Lisa discusses the impacts of trauma, the aftermath of mass violence, and how we can better prepare for and mitigate the active shooter threat.

     

    Event: Classic Movie Monday: Rocky Horror Picture Show

    When: Monday, October 29 at 7pm

    Event: Ben Smith – Picardy Album Release

    When: Saturday, November 3 at 7:30pm

    About: West Chester’s own Ben Smith will celebrate the release of his new album, Picardy.The new album is the latest in a long line of song projects Ben has taken on over the last 20+ years—with bands (The Gilroys, Wise and Foolish Builders, Missing Palmer West), solo records (2011’s Crooked Earth, 2013’s EP Ravine Road, 2015’s Das Defino: a song suite), his annual Old Man Winter holiday song catalog, his songs-for-hire project Songsmith, and his in-the-works musical Page Two.

     

    Event: Latin Grammy Winner Eduardo Betancourt – Ad Libitum Concert

    When: Sunday, November 4 at 3pm

    About: Venezuelan Harpist, producer, arranger, composer and multi-instrumentalist, with 25 years of experience in traditional and Fusion Venezuelan music will perform with full band.

     

    Event: TEDxWestChester Presents Crossroads

    When: Thursday, November 8 at 6pm

    About: TEDxWestChester features five speakers whose lives and projects were shaped by the crossroads of change. They are influencers and innovators improving lives locally in our Chester County and Philadelphia neighborhoods. Their experiences have shaped their ideas – and – their ideas are shaping the future.

     

     

    Event: Mason Porter at Uptown!

    When: Friday, November 9 at 7:30pm

    About:Mason Porter got its start in the 2006 informally as friends playing folk songs together at parties in West Chester, PA. The band consists of core members Joe D’Amico (mandolin, guitar, vocals), Tim Celfo (upright bass, vocals), Paul Wilkinson (guitar, vocals) and is typically augmented with other instrumentalist at live shows. The band released their debut EP Mason Porter (2008) resulting in immediate praise. Following up with full lengths Thunder In The Valley (2009) and a collection of traditional folk and covers Story Of the Rifle (2011), the band became a fixture on the regional scene. Through the process of writing, recording and constant gigging, the band developed its original sound blending folk, bluegrass, blues, country and rock influences into the unique personality that IS Mason Porter.

     

    Event: “50’s Come Alive Doo Wop Concert”

    When: Saturday, November 10 at 7pm

    About:Pookie Hudson’s Spaniels will headline a huge “50’s Come Alive” Doo Wop All-Acappella concert at the Uptown Knauer Performing Arts Center on November 10, 2018. The concert takes its name from a 1981 song by the Wizards. While the Wizards are no more, their lead singer, Joel Katz will be singing this song and others acappella with his new group, Joel & the Dynamics.

     

    Event: Jazz Cocktail Hour: Soulful Jazz Vocalist Sherry Wilson Butler & The Aaron Graves Trio

    When: Thursday, November 15 at 6:30pm

    About: Stand up, sit down, clap your hands, and experience this passionate, & spirit filled woman interpreting upbeat contemporary jazz, R&B, pop, and gospel. Butler haunts audiences with influences of Betty Carter, Diane Reeves, Phyllis Hyman, Nina Simone, and Sarah Vaughn. 

     

    Event: Partners in Outreach Presents The 6th Annual “Laughs 4 Literacy”

    When: Friday, November 16 at 7pm

    About: LAUGHS 4 LITERACY is our major fundraiser and FUN-raiser! Join us for an evening of laughter and camaraderie as we raise funds for, and awareness of, the needs of our youth in Chester County and surrounding areas. There will be food, an open bar, raffles, and comedians. 

     

    Event: Liberty Wind Symphony – Autumn Leaves, Fanfares For Brass!

    When: Sunday, November 18

    About: Join the Liberty Wind Symphony for an evening of music for brass ensemble and big band. Works by Henri Tomasi, Gordon Jacob and Stan Kenton will be featured with the unique spin we have come to expect from the Liberty Wind Symphony. You won’t want miss this one!

     

    Event: Speaker Series Presents Trump At Mid-term With Matt Kerbel

    When: Thursday, November 20 at 6:30pm

    About: The mid-term election is a moment of truth for the Trump administration, with control of congress and numerous state governments on the line. Political analyst and commentator Matt Kerbel will make sense of the results and discuss how they will shape politics for the remainder of the decade.

     

    Event: Dueling Pianos at Uptown!

    When: Friday, November 23 at 7:30pm

    About: Dueling Pianos at Uptown! features a new duo of talented and entertaining pianists every month. Audience driven, it’s never the same show twice!

     

    Event: Better Than Bacon: Interactive Improv Comedy

    When: Saturday, November 24 at 7:30pm

    About: Better Than Bacon performs in completely unscripted improvisational games, which are all driven by YOUR suggestions and interactions. Every word and every action is completely made up on-the-spot…it is never the same show twice!

     

    Event: Opera Tutti Cabaret Presents “Americana 2 – Celebrating Home & Family”

    When: Sunday, November 25 at 3pm

    About: Because there is just so much good music, Uptown! had to add another one of their most popular musical events!

     

    Event: Summer Club – Swinging Holiday Spectacular

    When: Sunday, November 25 at 7pm

    About: Get your holiday season swinging at The Summer Club Holiday Spectacular, featuring holiday favorites like “White Christmas”, “Let It Snow”, “Sleigh Ride”, “Christmas Waltz” and many others. They’ll be “sung and swung” by Jeff Coon, JP Dunphy, Michael O’Brien along with Larry Lees and the tremendous 17-piece Summer Club Band. It’s the perfect way to get yourself in the musical mood for “the most wonderful time of the year”- Joey Abramowicz.

     

     

    Event: Sneak Peek Preview of “Billboard”

    When: Monday, November 26 at 7pm

    About: Be one of the first to see Zeke Zelker’s highly anticipated movie ‘Billboard’ at Uptown! The filmmaker will be on hand after the screening to answer audience questions.

    Event: WCStudio at Uptown! Presents Holiday Cheer Concert & Show

    When: Friday, November 30 at 5pm

    About: BA family friendly event in two acts. Act 1 is a concert of fun and familiar holiday songs performed by Broadway Kiddos, Broadway Kids Cabaret, WCStudio Singers & Uptown Singers, including a very merry sing-along. Act 2 is a Holiday Play by actors in the Professional Youth Program.
